Use this when you ring your bank to ask for a better rate. Swap the bracketed values for figures from the rates tables above.
"Hi — I'm calling regarding my current variable rate. It doesn't look competitive in comparison to current offerings.
I've seen <Bank A> and <Bank B> are offering <rate from card>%, and noticed that you are offering <your bank's new-customer rate>% to new clients.
I'd like you to please review my current rate to match this <new-customer rate>% — given that I'm a long-term customer.
If you're not willing to offer this rate, I will look at refinancing away to another bank."
If currently on a fixed rate
Suggest obtaining break costs at the same time — split loans, etc. Often worth running in parallel.
Escalation path
If the front-line team can't help, ask them to put a loan discharge form through to the retentions team — that's who can move on rate.
Pushing further
You can also raise cashback offers from competitors. Less commonly honoured by your existing bank — but worth a try.
